Ok - you guys may have heard this but Wizoo was bought by digi / Avid / M-Audio end of 2005 - wizoo tells you that. WizooVerb is rated one of the best convolution reverbs if not the very best (review below) and makes other 3rd party impulses even better. It was selling at $449 to $499 - but since it is not in distribution right now - dealers blew out their stock.
I'm just sharing because I'm so stoked with this - a guy on ebay has the bundle WizooVerb W2 & W5 combo (stereo and surround versions) for $99 + $9 shipping. It's too good a deal to pass up so a few friends and I have all bought it - the guy sends you a fedex ground tracking # the next day. Here is a review of the W2 (2 channel stereo):
Introduction
The latest trend in today’s plug-in market is a little thing called “convolution reverb.” And for good reason! Convolution reverbs are amazing sample-based reverbs that offer a much more realistic way of bringing a sense of “real space” to a recording; they tend to sound extremely natural in character, as opposed to the metallic shine of artificial reverb.
They are created by playing a special sweep tone, alarm pistol, or sound signal into a space and capturing the sonic character of the room with well-placed microphones. Special software is then used to extract the information from the recording and convert it into a file called an “impulse response” (IR) that can be loaded into a “convolution reverb” plug-in. As you run sound through the plug-in, such as a voice or instrument, that sound will be processed by the same calculations and sound as if it’s being played in that room or space.
There is a ton of user-grade as well as professional-grade impulses available, as well as a good number of audio plug-ins to run them. Choosing the right reverb can make a huge difference on your sound, and not many of us can afford to buy every single plug-in out there to try them all.
For those of you musicians and producers out there wondering what to do in a world full of reverb choices, this may be it! Wizooverb W2 isn’t the same ol’ flavor of reverb at all. It sounds both colorful and realistic, and it’s able to load your favorite flavor of standard convolution reverb alongside an advanced reverb algorithm called Acoustic Impulse Rendition (AIR), which offers an innovative way to add control to your IR models. On top of all that, Wizooverb W2 hits home again with a new proprietary convolution format called High Definition Impulse Response (HDIR), and a highly intuitive way of controlling it.
The HDIR format is said to outshine conventional impulse responses “across the full stretch of the recording and processing chain,” according to the developers at Wizoo-and I’ll take their word for it; they sound nothing less than amazing. The format was created by an outstanding engineer from Germany named Ralph Kessler, who also developed custom post-processing software for the high definition impulse response library he had captured over the course of three years. His self-developed technique successfully extracts metadata from the impulse responses and removes unwanted side-effects, which many impulse libraries won’t do. This special library of “HDIR models” is now available in Wizooverb W2 for your listening pleasure.
Installation
Installation of Wizooverb W2 is fairly simple, just pop the DVD into your DVD drive and launch the setup program. Wizooverb asks you where to install, what format of plug-in to install (VST or RTAS), where you would like the impulse library to go and you’re all done. You either run Wizooverb W2 as a plug-in running from your sequencer or host, or you can load it as a standalone to turn a computer or laptop into a high quality external reverb unit. The copy protection is pretty quick too, just open the stand-alone version, go to the setup page and choose either online or offline certification. It either links you directly or gives you an html file which links you to a webpage form, you fill out the form, it emails you a file and you just open that file on the computer with Wizooverb W2 installed on it. The copy I have for this review came with demo versions of Darbuka and Latigo that are two great percussion plugs from Wizoo.
Getting Started
If you know a little bit about reverb then Wizooverb’s interface will be pretty familiar to you right away. But for the novice reverb user I suggest loading up a single instrument or some simple drums in a loop and turning each knob or slider slowly back and forth, one by one and listening for the changes in sound. Of course, the manual always helps! I found the manual actually fun to read, as it doesn’t get over technical and it explains everything pretty clearly, although there are a few funny typos due to the German translation.
When you load up one of the HDIR models, Wizooverb W2 offers a couple of crafty ways to use them. First off, you can simply load an HDIR model in the default way, using the built in browser. This offers a nice range of controls to manipulate the sound and texture of it. Alternatively, you can also choose to cleverly swap out the tail and/or the early reflections to be re-created with an AIR algorithm, which offers a deeper sense of real-time control over the sound, and it demands less from your CPU. This is great for those times in which you need total creative control to get crazy with tweaking, or for use on louder parts, for instance, when you want the power of realistic early reflections, but don’t need a perfect, subtle decay eating up your CPU bar.
Feature Review
There is a global width knob on the input to help bring the sound more “upfront” or to push it further back into the sound field, and another width knob on the output to shrink or enlarge the room. I got quick results using these knobs to create 3-D effects on drums using tight, punchy reverbs. These knobs double as left/right spread/mix knobs when in mono mode.
There are five knobs front and center on the first page which control pre-delay, room size, and “main time” which controls reverb time. The other two knobs are customizable and can be set to control any available parameter such as early reflection/tail balance, spread, EQ controls, and low or high frequency decay values. That way you can have your most used parameters right in front of you for constant automation and tweaking.
As previously mentioned, on the “edit” page there is an easy to use 4-band parametric equalizer (which only affects the reverb), and it has the familiar smooth grey look and feel of “flash-esque” programs (e.g. Ableton Live). Thin spikes and dips are easy to dial in; the two adjustable EQ bands get plenty skinny, and setting cutoff points for the high and low shelves is a no-brainer -just drag the dots or twist the knobs.
There is also a graphic envelope here that can be applied to HDIR and IR models to help sculpt your reverb shape. Setting fast rising attack slopes can grant you a nice, trippy “wooshing” sound, and you can easily lengthen or cut your tail short for more gated reverb effects. Also, there’s a handy reverse function on the edit page to help you get those sci-fi effects as well.
The early reflections (ER) tab provides more control over your HDIR and IR models, and contains provisions found on most reverb units. With the “directivity” knob you can trim the beginning of the tail for a more clear, open sound (otherwise known as “diffusion”). Up to 200 milliseconds of pre-delay can be added in addition to the model’s default pre-delay, for some serious slapback echoing going on. There’s a spread knob that controls the rate at which the early reflections start to smash together and directly affects the density of the reverb sound, often increasing “punch.” You can also control at what point the early reflections end and the tail begins, and the relative loudness of both of them, so you could have a more “boomy” or a more “roomy” sound if you like it like that. (uh huh!)
Individual decay settings can be applied for mid, high, and low frequencies and crossover points can be set for each. This basically means that your bass frequencies can have a shorter or longer reverb time than your mid frequencies, or high frequencies, or any combination of the three.
It takes some practice at first, but if you play around with these decay settings you can get sounds to have the perfect color of reverberation. For example, you could throw some drums in a room and set a short decay for the bass frequencies to tighten up the low end without losing the airy ambience or thick punch of the room. Or, for instance, you could shorten the high frequency decay on a reverbed-out guitar to dampen the sound without losing that initial bright “shine” in the beginning of the decay. I found that most HDIR models offer a decent amount of control over this, but for some HDIR models swapping the tail out for the AIR algorithm provided much more satisfying results.
To swap out an HDIR tail for an AIR one, all you do is click the “render tail” button on the edit page. Click it again to switch it back. AIR tails lighten the load on your CPU, since it takes fewer calculations to perform, but it grants you a wider range of flexibility with real-time parameters such as Tail Delay, Room Size, Ambience, Density and Color. Swapping out the early reflections also lightens the computer load, but offers only three parameters: pre-delay, spread, and ER/Tail balance (level of early reflection vs. tail). In addition, there are three quality modes available in the setup menu, which can also lower your CPU usage. I personally had fun automating these parameters and mangling sounds in real-time, creating over-the-top convolutions and strange metallic shine.
For those of you who wish to use your own library of impulse responses there is a mini editor to help optimize standard impulse responses for use with Wizooverb W2. You can trim silence from the beginning of your IR, remove the original impulse signal, or adjust the gain with the trim, dir, and gain functions respectively. All of these functions are non-destructive so they won’t harm your original file at all. If you make a mistake you can always go back, and if you like the changes you can save the whole thing as a new file. Wizooverb W2 is compatible with both stereo and true stereo IR models.
All of the knobs on Wizooverb’s interface are fully adjustable. In the setup page there are options for linear (up-down), circular, relative circular (to prevent sudden “jumps” in values when twisting), and “from host” which adapts the knob style that your sequencer is using. You can also use your mouse wheel to turn the knobs or simply click on the values and type them in with your keyboard. Ctrl-click sets parameters back to default. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get my M-audio Radium midi controller to turn the knobs on-screen and after a 30 minute wait on the phone M-audio (who now owns and does tech support for Wizoo) confirmed that this “may not be possible just yet.” I got a similar answer in one day by reporting a tech support incident at M-AUDIO and I didn’t have to wait on the phone at all.
Conclusion and Summary
I found that Wizooverb W2 is an easy to use hybrid-type convolution reverb that excels sonically in all directions. This would be a reverb best suited for applications mainly involving music, although post-production heads and sound designers alike will also find excellent use for it as well. (Certainly, with a price tag like this.) The interface is slick, the library of HDIR models is impressive, the AIR algorithm sounds wonderful, and there’s a good amount of control over things. I had a fabulous time using the presets, and they even let you load your own IR models. To my humble ears, other brands of IR’s sound better when loaded up into Wizooverb. The whole concept of this reverb plug in is noteworthy indeed. Score one for Wizoo. I would put this up alongside reverbs costing tens of thousands. No joke! Check out the demos I made and see for yourself!

Note about demo files:
This is a drum loop and a synth loop I banged out on my midi keyboard, each of them 4 bars long. Both tracks were recorded with no processing or effects except for Wizooverb W2. You will hear the dry loop play in the beginning, followed by a different reverb preset about every 2 bars thereafter. You will hear a short “beep” in between each reverb preset.
